Kanye West has gone out West. The rapper, music producer, fashion designer, and entrepreneur known for his real estate holdings in Calabasas has also made some major land grabs in Wyoming.
Last year, the husband of the reality TV star Kim Kardashian West made headlines when he purchased Monster Lake Ranch, 11 miles outside of Cody, WY. Since renamed West Lake Ranch, the $14 million property of 9,000 acres includes a restaurant and saloon, an event space, office building, horse barns, and a shooting range.
West struck again a few months later and picked up another property in the town of Greybull, WY. The $14.5 million ranch, on 6,713 acres, includes heated helicopter pads and walk-in saunas, TMZ reported. A source told People that Kanye, 42, intends to use the space for his “Sunday Services.”
West has made no secret of his affection for Wyoming. He recorded part of his ninth studio album, “Jesus Is King,” in Cody. He’s purchased an additional 11 acres of commercial property within the town. And the New York Times reported he’s looking to produce his Yeezy fashion line there, even moving some of his team to the Cowboy State. The man known as Yeezus also apparently started to build an amphitheater in Wyoming, but the construction had to pause for lack of proper permits.
West is in fine company when it comes to his choice of Wyoming. Charlie Powers, listing agent for Powers Land Brokerage, notes that the town of Cody has long attracted “a lot of net worth up here.” Bill and Melinda Gates have a ranch nearby, as does Ron Simek, co-founder of Tombstone Pizza.
But the area has long been known for roping steers rather than recording.
“Ranching and farming is a lifestyle choice,” Powers says. “They choose it. People in ranches, they like the beauty and they like the outdoors. And they like the lifestyle that it affords them.”
He noted that the area has a mix of both working cattle ranches and recreational ranches, where the only work required is to “just look out your window and enjoy the view.”
The Times added a healthy dose of skepticism in reporting that the mercurial star would be putting down roots in the state.
“It can be hard, with Kanye West, to separate concrete plans from jokes, fancies, or outlandish aspirations,” it commented. “For now, the people of Cody have to wait and see what develops.”
Should the multihyphenate mogul want to put down more roots in Wyoming, we’ve spotted seven options for additional plots he can add to his Western empire.
So slip on your cowboy boots, press play on “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,” and have a look at what West could buy…
