The Richard Meier–designed Broad estate on Carbon Beach in Malibu, CA, is now on the market for $75 million. Its sky-high price tag has earned the mansion the title of the week’s most expensive new listing on realtor.com®.
Billionaire businessman and philanthropist Eli Broad and his wife, Edythe Broad, have owned the home for about two decades, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The couple picked up two beachfront parcels in the exclusive area known as “Billionaires Beach” in 2001 for about $5 million, according to the Journal. They then tapped Meier, who designed the world-famous Getty Center, to create the glass-and-aluminum modern marvel with 105 feet of beachfront.
“Ours is probably the most important house currently for sale on Carbon Beach,” Broad told the Journal. “It’s a masterpiece.”
Indeed, the stellar location combined with smart design resulted in an exquisite estate measuring 5,374-square feet with five bedrooms and seven bathrooms.
“The goal was clear from inception; nothing short of perfection would suffice for the discerning Eli Broad,” the listing notes. “The result is pure residential art.”
The interiors, designed by Rose Tarlow, feature living spaces that take in the ocean from every room. The minimalist white box and neutral palette create a perfect showcase for artwork.
In the two-story living room with walls of glass, an Alexander Calder mobile hangs from the ceiling.
Other features include a large deck, an office, a four-car garage, and a guesthouse. The grassy backyard includes space to entertain and dine, with stairs leading to the beach.
Following a string of monumental sales in Malibu, the Broads may have decided the time was right to sell.
Last month, a Malibu estate came on the market for $115 million, which made it the most expensive new listing that week.
Last year, a $125 million home sale closed in Malibu, which set an area record. It followed the $110 million sale of a beachfront home of Peter Morton, co-founder of the Hard Rock Cafe. Also a Meier design, that home set a sales record in 2018 for Los Angeles County.
The Broads have been longtime supporters of the arts, and their contemporary collection can be seen at The Broad museum in downtown Los Angeles. According to the Journal, the couple used the beach house as a weekend escape, and are no longer going there as much.
Branden Williams and Rayni Williams with Hilton & Hyland hold the listing.
