This Midcentury Modern Home in Seattle Is a 1950s Time Capsule

Seattle, a beautiful city known for its eclectic neighborhoods, is dotted with Craftsman and “Northwest-style” wood homes, with sprawling porches and patios. Its major industrial activity, thanks to shipbuilding and the aerospace industry, gave the Seattle area many modern homes in the 1950s and ’60s.

The midcentury modern look continues to be popular and highly coveted in this section of the country. Right now, one of those sought-after designs is available for $3.35 million.

Even at such a hefty price tag, many details make this home worth the dough.

First, Seattle isn’t cheap. It’s actually the fifth most expensive city in the United States to live in at the moment. The home’s setting, on over an acre of land, is a rarity. And the house offers a generous 5,640 square feet of living space.

Then, there’s the design itself. Step inside, and it’s like going back in time. The five-bedroom, four-bath home, which was created by the award-winning Lawrence and Hazen Architects, looks as though it belongs on the cover of a 1950s architecture or home magazine.

Meticulously maintained, much of this home is in incredible shape, with many 1950s details preserved. Of course, there is room for some updating, for example in the kitchen and bathrooms, which appear to have original light fixtures. We could also do without the wall-to-wall carpeting.

But for the most part, the details are exquisite. The living space extends to a deck outside. Wood-paneled walls meet stone accents. The characteristic angular shapes of the period are apparent in every room. Walls of glass provide spectacular water views. And everything seems to be in pristine condition.

That’s not all that makes this property fantastic. It’s also on the waterfront of Lake Washington, with 100 feet of water frontage, a dock, and a boat slip. The location offers picture-perfect views of the iconic Mount Rainier. It really doesn’t get any better.

All in all, it’s clear that the features of this home make it well worth the price tag. Someone must also feel that way: This droolworthy listing is already in “contingent sale” status.
