Fans of “Eloise” should get ready to “charge it, please.” An ornately appointed apartment located in the famed Plaza Hotel in Manhattan has come on the market for $45 million. The steep price tag made it this week’s most expensive new listing on realtor.com®.

The owner of the gilded apartment is a company linked to Olga Kogan, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Kogan is married to billionaire businessman Valery Kogan, who is co-owner of the Domodedovo Airport in Moscow. According to Forbes, he owns a $31 million home in Israel modeled after the White House as well as an $18 million property in Connecticut.

The Journal notes that the company tied to this wealthy Russian family purchased separate apartments in the Plaza in 2007 and 2008 for about $26 million, and proceeded to combine them into a four-bedroom, 4.5-bath home.

The resulting apartment is an “exceptionally rare opportunity to live luxuriously at the world-renowned Plaza Residences,” the listing notes.

The home features an “architecturally significant” Plaza turret with views of the city skyline and Central Park.

The ornate decor “reminiscent of French royalty” features exotic stone, custom millwork, period moldings, and oversize windows.

The great room features paneled walls, crystal chandeliers, and inlay flooring. Built-ins feature scrolled ironwork, and the corridor includes a built-in bar.

The layout includes a formal dining room, wood-paneled study, and library. A galley kitchen is equipped with top-of-the-line appliances and ample cabinetry.

Particularly notable is the master suite, complete with designer wall coverings and a spa bath covered in floor-to-ceiling onyx.

For wealthy buyers searching for an iconic pied-à-terre, nothing beats the Plaza Hotel. Steps from Central Park, the landmark hotel, which opened in 1907, served as the backdrop of the “Eloise at the Plaza” children’s book from Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight, which was eventually made into a Disney movie. The building has also been featured in many films, most memorably in “Home Alone 2” (in which then-owner Donald Trump makes a cameo).

That’s right, President Trump owned the trophy property at one point, buying it for $390 million in 1988. He appointed his wife at the time, Ivana Trump, as the hotel’s president, and she oversaw a $50 million remodel to the interiors. But even while the hotel made profits, a large debt load proved onerous, and eventually a deal was reached with creditors in a 1992 bankruptcy plan.

The most recent owner closed the hotel in 2005 and invested $350 million in renovations. It reopened in 2007 with 181 condominium apartments and 282 hotel units.

The newly refreshed hotel (complete with the Betsey Johnson–designed Eloise suite for $995 a night) remains a draw for hotel guests and residents alike.

Located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park, the building includes a landmarked residential lobby, landscaped gardens and fountain, five-star concierge service, 24/7 door attendants, and a gym.

Residents can also enjoy the hotel’s Oak Room, Oak Bar, Palm Court restaurant, Champagne Bar, and Plaza Food Hall as well as spa, maid, valet, and limousine services.

The Plaza has attracted notable buyers in the past, including designer Tommy Hilfiger, who recently sold his penthouse there for $31.25 million in 2019, which had been on the market for as much as $80 million.

Tal Alexander with Douglas Elliman holds the listing.
