Renée Zellweger has dominated headlines for her Oscar win portraying Judy Garland in the biopic “Judy,” but an unassuming house in Katy, TX, may also be basking in the buzz, and for good reason: It’s Zellweger’s childhood home, and it’s for sale for just $750,000.
“This home won’t last,” reads the listing for this 2,897-square-foot, four-bedroom ranch house about 30 miles west of Houston. “Once home to famed actress Renee Zellweger.”
Granted, Zellweger hasn’t lived at the Willow Lane home for decades, but the parents of one of her high school cheerleading teammates still live on the street, according to the Houston Chronicle. The current owners have lived in the home for about seven years.
Although the house has been listed only since late January, its connection to a famous former resident has already attracted plenty of attention—from spectators to serious house hunters, according to the home’s listing agent, Christina Namaki of Exp Realty.
The Hollywood tie “has brought a lot of publicity, a lot of exposure,” Namaki told realtor.com® by phone.
In fact, an offer for the house did come in the day after the Oscars, though Namaki insists, “I know the Oscars has nothing to do with it.”
She declined to share more details, but added that in the wake of the Academy Awards, “I got a lot of texts telling me about the win, and saying I’ll likely get a lot more offers in.”
What buyers love about Zellweger’s childhood home
Interestingly, the home may indeed be drawing interest for a reason unrelated to Zellweger. Namaki says potential buyers have shown a lot of interest in the home’s placement on “two unrestricted acres” outside the jurisdiction of a homeowners association. That’s a big plus if you don’t like HOA boards dictating what you do on your property.
The 2 acres also include a private baseball field—a boon to a family of Little Leaguers.
Granted, the home has changed a lot since Zellweger lived there, but nonetheless, it reveals that this A-list star comes from rather humble beginnings. Curious to see what it’s like? Here’s an inside tour of Zellweger’s childhood home.
Decked out in neutral colors, the living room features built-in bookcases, an exposed-beam ceiling, and brick fireplace.
The kitchen is bright with white cabinets, stainless-steel appliances, an island, and lots of counter space. Along with eating space in the kitchen, there’s a separate dining room for larger get-togethers and a smaller bar area that’s perfect for more intimate gatherings.
“Enjoy the Texas sunset right from your master retreat or soak in the recently updated master bathroom soaking tub,” the listing says.
The home has four bedrooms, making it perfect for families. The master bedroom has a sliding closet door made from rustic wood—and, wood floors. Plus, there are lots of windows.
The master bathroom houses a large soaking tub, with rustic wood details and plenty of storage and counter space. The home has another full bath and two half-bathrooms.
Whether you work from home or just need a space to pay bills and check emails, the bright, spacious office gives you a place to get things done.
The home also has plenty of outdoor green spaces to enjoy. The large back porch is perfect for watching the sunset or summertime barbecues.
“Sit out on the back patio and watch the kids play baseball on your own private baseball field,” the listing says.
