The folk singer Arlo Guthrie has serenaded the masses with socially conscious music for the better part of 60 years. As an artist with a long, prolific career, he’s traveled all over the world and could easily make a home anywhere. For Guthrie, the coastline of Florida beckoned.
But he didn’t choose just any old house on one of Florida’s sandy waterways. Instead, he snapped up a former U.S. Coast Guard station that resembles a fortress. Guthrie painstakingly rebuilt the entire structure, but his love affair with this unique place is coming to an end. He recently listed the safe haven for $1.65 million.
“The property was built by the U.S Coast Guard to oversee the Sebastian Inlet during World War II, and later sold to a crabmeat and fish canning business,” says the listing agent, Janyne Kenworthy.
Although he loved the original structure, Guthrie had to rebuild it from the ground up, because it didn’t meet code standards.
“We were given several options to bring the structure to code, but they were each economically absurd,” Kenworthy explains. “So, we tore down the original building and replaced it with its copy, but with modern construction materials as of 2010.”
The hulking 10,000-square-foot home now features four bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. A grand lanai opens to huge living spaces that have a ton of natural light pouring in. And the location in Sebastian, FL, is one of the biggest selling points of this cool conversion.
“The property’s 180-degree view of the river and the marine wildlife is incredibly breathtaking,” says Kenworthy. ”The private white sand beach is perfectly situated for a deepwater dock as well.”
The property also includes an additional 2.35-acre parcel to the west, which could be developed into town homes, single-family homes, or an enormous estate that could pair with Guthrie’s place, for a colossal compound.
