You might know, by heart, the price of a quart of milk at Whole Foods. Or perhaps you can nail the going rate for Gucci handbags (knockoffs and the real McCoy). As the longest-running game show of all time, “The Price Is Right,” proves all too well, pinpointing how much things cost is a popular pastime, even a sport.
But how good are you at guessing the price of a house?
Perhaps you’ve recently set foot in someone’s new digs and secretly mused, “Hmmm, I wonder how much they spent on this?” Or maybe you’re home shopping yourself, and keep a close eye on the going rate for three-bedroom Craftsmans in your area. Or you might just fancy yourself as knowing the true value of all things, real estate included.
The truth is, of all the countless different things you can buy, a house has perhaps the toughest price to pinpoint.
What makes home prices such moving targets? For one, sellers set their own list prices, which buyers bargain down (or bid up) from there. Plus, while the median listing price nationwide hovers around $309,000, that number can run far below that to well above, based on what you’re buying, and where.
Up for a challenge? Try this new quiz where we present you with listing photos from five houses across the country and ask you to guess how much they sold for recently. You might be surprised by how high—or low—homes can go!
